The Abbey End land mine explosion was of course the most devastating attack on Kenilworth in the Second World War. Indeed, one would need to look back some centuries to find loss of life on the same scale in town.

Reports by eyewitnesses, newspapers and other published accounts on the events of 21st November 1940 are at times inconsistent and contradictory, lacking in detail and even clearly incorrect. This is not a criticism, it is merely a reflection on how difficult the times were and how memories can play tricks in such disturbing events, but through it all it is possible to collect the facts.

I have attempted to pull together as much accurate information as possible to be able to tell, perhaps for the first time, precisely what happened.
